Over time, skin tends to lose some of its elasticity on areas of the face and body. During this time, fat volume can also be lost. This results in volume loss, lines, creases and depressed areas that can make you appear tired or drawn. It is common for lips to lose their volume and appear thinner as we age.
Fat transfer, also known as “Fat Grafting” or “Micro–Lipoinjection” can be used to correct many of these areas, as well as improve acne scarring. During the procedure, fat is harvested from one part of the body (donor) such as the abdomen, thighs or buttocks, and injected into the areas that require correction (target) such as the chin, cheeks or lips.

The fat transfer procedure is a three-step process. The steps are fat removal from a donor area of the body, purifying it, then injecting the fat cells into the target site. The fat grafting results are usually immediate and can last for several years or can be permanent.
Performed alone, fat transfer is usually done with a local anesthesia. The type and amount depends on the amount of liposuction and fat transfer required. You should avoid blood thinners such as Ibuprofen and aspirin for two weeks prior to the procedure.
Fat removal is the first step of fat grafting. Liposuction is used to remove excess fat from the donor site. These can be the abdomen, buttocks, hips or thighs. A small-gauge hypodermic needle or cannula is used to limit damage to the fat cells.
Isolating fat cells is step two of fat transfer. The extracted fat is then spun in a high-speed centrifuge to separate impurities such as blood and anesthesia. Only whole, undamaged and clean fat cells are used for fat transfer
Re-injection of the fat is step three of fat transfer. The procedure is completed by purified fat cells being injected into the target site(s). Areas of your face, lips and under eyes will receive a new contour. A separate hypodermic syringe is used to inject in the target areas to achieve your desired look.
Fat Transfer Recovery
Patients will experience swelling and bruising after a facial fat transfer. This is temporary and should subside after a few weeks. Discomfort due to fat grafting will be controlled by pain medication and you will be given postoperative instructions from our professional team. Many of our patients, especially those in the public eye, take a week or two off work in order to recover from a facial fat transfer procedure. However, patients will be able to cover any bruises with makeup after 3-5 days of healing.
Choosing a Plastic Surgeon for Fat Transfer
Choosing a plastic surgeon for fat transfer has implications that can last for several years if not your entire life. A successful facial fat transfer will provide you with a new self-confidence that will add many benefits to your existing lifestyle. Unsuccessful fat transfer at the hands of an inexperienced surgeon can be devastating. It can lead to more cost, more time and more headache.
It is critical to find a board-certified cosmetic surgeon who has vast experience in fat transfer procedures. One who’s foundation is strong in education, compassion and success. Finding the right plastic surgeon is critical to getting the look you seek.
