Cysts are noncancerous, closed pockets of tissue that can be filled with fluid, pus, air or other material. Cysts are common skin lesions that can appear anywhere on the body. They often feel like large peas under the surface of the skin. Cysts can develop as a result of trauma or infection, clogging of sebaceous glands (oil glands), or around foreign bodies.

There are many different types of cysts which include epidermal, sebaceous, acne and pilar cysts. A pilar cyst is a firm, flesh-coloured round bump, usually found on the scalp. Sebaceous cysts form from a sebaceous gland that produces oil when the gland becomes damaged or blocked. Acne cysts tend to be the largest in size and located deeper within the skin. Cystic acne often looks like boils on the skin. These cysts can be large puss-filled, large white bump, redness, tender or painful to touch.

Treatment of cysts is not medically needed however, individuals consider elective removal for cosmetic reasons or due to pain or general discomfort. Depending on the size and type of cyst, treatment options may include punch excision, kenalog injection or surgical excision.
