Can Breast Reduction Really Be Scarless?

Don’t let big, heavy breasts weigh you down. Breast reduction surgery removes excess skin, fat, and breast tissue to reduce breast size. This procedure can dramatically reduce back pain and other symptoms associated with heavy breasts while improving your appearance both in and out of clothing.

Breast reduction is a dramatic reshaping and resizing of the breasts. Traditionally, this means scarring with incisions placed around the areola, down the middle of the breast, and under the breast. Lately, patients have been asking about a new trend in breast surgery: scarless breast reduction.

Here’s what you need to know about scarless breast reduction surgery.

What Is Scarless Breast Reduction?

The most common incision for breast reduction surgery is called the anchor incision, named for its unique shape. The surgeon places incisions around each areola, extending downward from the areola to the base of the breast, and in the inframammary fold. The anchor incision allows for significant skin and tissue removal and dramatic breast reshaping. The downside to this incision is the potential for some scarring on the breast.

Scarless breast reduction uses liposuction to remove fat from the breasts, which can decrease breast volume and alleviate some of the weight of the breasts. Liposuction uses small incisions placed in discreet locations around the treatment area. Scarring is minimal after a liposuction procedure.

Is Scarless Breast Reduction Right for Me?

Many women who need breast reduction surgery will benefit most from a full surgical technique. Removing skin and breast tissue, along with fat, allows for a full reshaping of the breast. Traditional breast reduction offers patients the best results available.

Though there are limits to what scarless breast reduction can achieve, this technique can be highly beneficial in some cases.

  • Gynecomastia: Gynecomastia is a common condition in which men have excess breast tissue. Significant gynecomastia may require surgical excision, but surgeons often use liposuction. Removing excess fat from the breast area can create a more masculine chest contour without scarring. Liposuction works best on men with minor or moderate puffiness in the breasts and extensive fatty tissue.
  • Small reductions: The breasts consist primarily of fatty tissue. Removing some of this fat can reduce breast size and weight in some patients. The best candidates for scarless breast reduction are looking for a moderate size reduction. The breasts must have extensive fatty tissue.

Women with loose, sagging skin aren’t good candidates for breast reduction with liposuction, because the procedure only removes fat.
