What is Erbium CO2 Resurfacing?
The more obvious signs of aging include deep wrinkles around the eyes and the mouth, deep nasolabial folds beside the mouth and all over “crepiness” and poor skin tone. Erbium CO2 laser is used to minimize significant and deeper wrinkles, fine lines, textural concerns and acne scarring, thus reducing many of the more prominent signs of aging. It can be performed alone, but is typically used to provide skin textural improvement when having a facelift or blepharoplasty (eyelid lift). It provides an accurate method of restoring softer, smoother and more youthful skin, with uniform colour and better texture.
Is it right for me?
The laser removes full upper layers of the skin to reveal fresh, new, healthy skin underneath. Due to the ablative nature of the laser, it only requires one treatment, however, patients can expect to be red, and the skin requires time to heal over at least a few weeks. This is often a suitable option for someone who does not wish to have multiple treatments to address their skin concerns, which would characterize less-invasive fractionated lasers such as Profractional, Fraxel or E2.
What should I expect?
In terms of what to expect, the experience will vary based on whether you are having the procedure at the same time as a surgical procedure such as facelift or blepharoplasty (eyelid lift) or whether its being performed alone. If it is just the Erbium CO2 on its own a topical numbing cream is applied to the face 1 hour before starting the procedure. Some discomfort is associated with this procedure, and the appropriate measures would be discussed in advance of your procedure to ensure you are as comfortable as possible both during and after the procedure. Since the skin will be quite sensitive after the procedure, your skincare will have to be modified to be as gentle and soothing as possible.
