Dermatosis Papulosa Nigra (DPN) is a harmless skin condition that tends to affect individuals with darker skin types. It consists of small, dark bumps that appear on the cheeks and forehead but also be found on the neck, upper back and chest. They typically are usually smooth, round and flat, but can range in size.

DPNs usually form during adolescence. As we get older, the bumps tend to grow bigger and increase in number. The exact reason is unknown, however the darker the skin type, the more likely one is to develop them. Heredity may play a role. Typically females are affected more frequently than males.

Treatment is not medically needed; however, individuals elect removal for cosmetic reasons. Dr. Sapra may use one method or a combination approach in removing a DPN depending on the size. Shave excision, Excel V laser and electrocautery are typical treatment methods. Patients should be aware that removal is temporary; over time they will return. It’s difficult to know how long that will be as it is different for every patient – anywhere from 1-10 years.
