Acne breakouts can have devastating effects on the skin, which include obvious pigmentation changes (brown/red spots) and textural scars. There are four main types of acne scars which include erythematous scars (pigmented scarring), ice pick scars, and hill and valley scarring.
At the Institute of Cosmetic and Laser Surgery in Oakville, Ontario we have all of the available treatments and technologies which can effectively treat even the most severe forms of acne scarring. We can also customize the treatment program to suit an individual’s timeline, lifestyle and budget. Some common treatment options for acne scarring include chemical peels, Fraxel®, Derm–Eclat™/Dermamelan, Skintx, Profractional™, E2 and Cynergy.
Erythematous scars are the “red” scars that remain after a breakout has healed. Without assistance, they may take many years to fade. This kind of scarring can be treated gently and effectively using a number of the above mentioned treatments.
Depending on the severity, ice pick scars may be assessed by either Dr. Sapra / Dr. Khanna. If milder in nature, they may be able to be treated using a TCA solution. Sculptra® can also be used to improve their appearance. If severe, Dr. Khanna may need to surgically excise them.
Hill and valley scarring is a form of acne scarring which is characterized by significant textural concerns including depressions in the skin. One of the most common and effective options for this type of scarring is Profractional™.
