Breast Augmentation with Cohesive Gel Implants

Women explore breast aesthetics for a myriad of reasons. Your reasons may be unique to you or be similar to others considering breast augmentation or reconstruction surgery. You may have a desire for more proportioned breasts, to return to your pre-pregnancy shape, to regain a figure altered by cancer or other trauma or simply just to turn back the clock.

Factors such as pregnancy (when milk ducts are temporarily enlarged), rapid weight loss, and the effects of gravity as you age combine to stretch the skin, which may cause the breast to droop or sag. It is important to realize that implants are used to make the breast larger. The implants alone may not adequately lift the breast, or correct the effects of pregnancy, weight loss, or skin stretching. Additional procedures at the time of breast augmentation may be recommended such as; a breast lift, a correction of an asymmetry, or nipple tuck.

Placement of implants and incision options are also unique to each patient. The breast implant can be placed either partially under the pectoralis major muscle (submuscular) or over the muscle and under the breast glands (subglandular), depending on the thickness of your breast tissue and its ability to adequately cover the breast implant. Options for incision sites are either periareolar, around the nipple, or inframammary, within the breast fold.

Cohesive gel implants have been designed to give the most natural look and feel to the breast. Since breast augmentation with cohesive gel implants is designed to focus more on proportions and dimensions rather than volume; it is particularly useful for women who are looking for a natural-shaped and proportionate-sized breast augmentation. Cohesive gel implants are silicone implants that have an additive in them which makes them superior to the former standard liquid silicone implants. If you cut into a standard silicone implant, the liquid silicone gel escapes from the implant shell. In contrast, when you cut into a cohesive gel implant, the implant itself maintains its shape and integrity much like cutting into a “gummy bear”.

Whatever your personal reasons for surgery, your results will reflect the unique characteristics of your body (size, shape and tissue characteristics) and goals of surgery. The right fit is a surgical outcome that does not change you, but takes the best of you and makes it better.
