What Is Breast Augmentation?

Therefore if you are currently not satisfied with the size and/or shape of your breasts, no matter what the reason may be, it is your right to pursue a change. At ICLS, we promote confidence and self-esteem; if you need help feeling more confident about yourself, then consider scheduling a consultation with Dr. Julie Khanna today.
A “breast augmentation” pertains to an elective cosmetic surgery procedure that changes the size and shape of the breasts, commonly with the assistance of silicone or saline breast implants. As each patient has different needs and goals, not to mention different body types, surgeries are tailored to each individual’s requirements.
During your first consultation, you will be asked a series of routine questions to better determine what you want to get out of the surgery. These questions often center around such ideas as why you want the breast augmentation, what you’re hoping to gain post-surgery and a briefing of your medical history and conditions. The surgeon will also take this time to assess your general health, examine your breasts, take photographs and thoroughly discuss your different options on moving forward.
From pregnancy and weight loss, to hereditary traits and mastectomies, women from all sorts of backgrounds have made the decision to alter the size and/or shape of their breasts. Whatever your specific reason may be, we are not here to judge but only give you the tools to ensure you can reach your optimal result.

The specific breast augmentation procedure involves the placement of breast implants, either above or beneath the breast muscle, ultimately creating a natural, beautiful-looking bust. This procedure is also commonly referred to as “augmentation mammoplasty”.
Many potential patients ask about where the incisions (or the entry point of the breast implant) are placed. The most common incision placements are underneath your breast, or around the lower edge of your areola (the pigmented skin around the nipple). These sites are chosen to distinctly minimize any scarring, since they are concealed in the natural folds of the body.
After the incision is made, a pocket is created for the implant in the space between your breast and your chest wall. Depending on your particular breast implant placement, the pocket will either be behind your natural breast tissue or behind the muscle.
Finally before the incision is closed, the implant is adjusted for shape and position.

Breast Implants
Cohesive gel implants come in a variety of shapes, sizes and styles. This assists Dr. Khanna in finding the exact implants that would be best suited to your proportions. In fact, Dr. Khanna uses scientific measurements to accurately determine which range of implants would create the most natural and cosmetically appealing breast augmentation according to your shape, size and height.
Unlike some doctors, Dr. Khanna, a Canadian leader in cohesive gel silicone breast augmentation, takes the time to not only truly understand your needs but also explain the range of benefits and limitations of each type of implant, procedure and incision. Then, Dr. Khanna will customize your surgical procedure to ensure that your new breasts are precisely what you are expecting.
Factors to consider before your surgery (which can also be discussed with your doctor) include:
- Implant size, shape, and type (i.e. round, teardrop, projection, silicone)
- Incision placement (i.e. the bottom crease of the breast or the areola)
- Implant placement (i.e. partially/completely under the chest muscle or breast tissue)
Prior to the surgery, patients are usually given general anesthesia. Once it’s time to begin the actual surgery, Dr. Khanna will make a surgical incision in the pre-determined location. Then she will create a small pocket to accommodate the implant.
After the implants have been properly positioned the incisions will be closed with sutures, followed by the employment of surgical dressings. In some cases, a support bra may be placed around the breasts to help the tissues heal.
Following the surgery in Oakville, patients are generally permitted to go home although an overnight stay may be available if requested.

What Can Breast Augmentation Improve?
As stated above, everyone has different wants, needs and goals. This fact is particularly true when it comes to breast augmentation: not all women are searching for the same results.
Generally, breast augmentation can help improve a variety of breast imperfections and/or dissatisfaction. While a large portion of women pursue this procedure due to the naturally small size of their breasts, others want to correct asymmetry in their breasts or improve breast shape. Some women choose to combine breast augmentation and breast lift surgery to restore sagging breasts to a much perkier position. It’s important to remember that both breast size and shape are subjective. For example, you may want something entirely different than what your friend wants.
It’s common for patients to choose to restore the size and/or shape of their breasts following a pregnancy, breast feeding or significant amount of weight loss. Further, women often discover that one breast is larger than the other or sits higher up, leading to the interest of surgery.
Breast enlargement surgery can increase breast size by just one or multiple bra cup sizes. When discussing options with your doctor, it’s imperative to be explicit and realistic.
Does Breast Augmentation Hurt?
Following surgery, pain is another subjective factor in patients: different women have different tolerances for pain. Interestingly enough, the perception of pain can be altered by a patient’s attitude prior to surgery.
Specifically, women who experience a feeling of excitement or happiness before the surgery are less likely to encounter higher amounts of pain. Often times, these patients describe the post-surgery as being just “uncomfortable.” However if a woman is nervous or apprehensive prior to the operation, she may be more likely to encounter feelings of pain. Keeping a positive attitude, despite other patients’ reviews and experiences is key.
While breast augmentation may not be a particularly painful experience, as with any type of surgery there are certain risks involved. For starters breast implants may make it more difficult to detect cancer during a routine mammogram, sometimes requiring additional testing to obtain a better view.
Other risks may include a loss of feeling in the nipple which can either be temporary or, very occasionally, permanent. A “capsular contracture” may develop too, in which scar tissue around the implant hardens and squeezes the implant. To correct this issue, a patient may require surgery to either remove the scar tissue or replace the implant.
Yet, when breast augmentation is performed by an experienced and professional doctor, the procedure is not only safe and less painful, but also more likely to yield long-lasting results.

The Aftercare Facts
It’s common after a breast augmentation (and most surgeries) for patients to feel sore and/or swollen. These side effects generally fade away after a few days. Prescription medication can help control any post-operative pain you may experience.
Women recovering from breast augmentation should get plenty of rest during the recovery period, meaning all strenuous activities should be avoided. To ensure safety, comfort and satisfaction, all normal activities should be eased into; though sometimes difficult, try to be patient.
A surgical bra may be worn for several weeks following the surgery, as the body’s tissues need time to conform to their new contours. If you have questions or concerns regarding post-operative matters, Dr. Khanna and her team can always be contacted and they welcome phone calls or emails.
Following surgery, remember these tips:
- You should still have regular mammogram screenings when appropriate (based on age and family history)
- Changes in weight (and pregnancy) can affect the results of surgery
- Because the aging process will not change, breast tissue will change
Dr. Khanna and the entire ICLS team have successfully helped hundreds of women with their breast augmentation needs. Now, let her help you!

Breast Augmentation FAQs
Are chest exercises permitted if my breast implants are positioned under the muscle?
Yes. In fact, you should exercise this area to prevent atrophy even with breast implants. If you have any questions about what exercise or routines are permitted, ask us during your consultation or during your breast augmentation recovery.
Can I go braless after my breast augmentation surgery in Ontario?
Although you can, we don’t recommend it. Forgoing a bra could cause your breasts to sag. Your Ontario breast implants, regardless of their position, need support like a natural breast.
What does breast augmentation cost in Ontario?
The average breast augmentation cost in Ontario ranges from $7,000 – $10,000. Although for an exact cost, you would need to schedule a consultation where all factors can be considered.
How do I choose the right size for my breast implants in Ontario?
The most effective way to choose the right size for breast implants in Ontario is to seek the services of a qualified plastic surgeon who understands the female anatomy and what it means to be a woman. Certified by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, Dr. Julie Khanna knows how to make a woman look good and feel confident. She is highly sought for her opinions as a leader in aesthetic plastic surgery.
