What Is Breast Augmentation?

Breast augmentation is a surgical enhancement that increases the size and shape of the breasts. Cosmetic breast augmentation can correct asymmetry, restore or improve volume, and enhance self-confidence.

There are two primary methods of breast augmentation: the use of silicone gel implants and fat transfer. Both methods create fuller, balanced breasts that are better in line with your personal aesthetic goals and your person’s natural body proportions. When you seek out Toronto breast augmentation, it is more than just enhancing size. It’s also about creating the perfect contours for your figure and self-image.

Breast Augmentation Candidacy

Breast augmentation in Oakville may be right for you are in good overall health. For many people, this procedure is best for enhancing their body shape and restoring a more natural, youthful appearance.

If you are seeking a moderate increase in breast size that restores your curves after significant weight loss, consider fat transfer breast augmentation. For those who want to see a larger increase, the use of implants provides more volume.

A personalized consultation with Dr. Julie Khanna can guide you through these options, ensuring the chosen method aligns with your personal needs and aesthetic goals.

Types of Breast Implants

When you meet with us to consider breast augmentation, Dr. Khanna will discuss several types of breast implants that could be a good fit for you. That includes:

  • Saline breast implants: These implants have a sterile saline solution within them. They are lightweight and feel soft. Saline implants offer a more uniform shape and feel.
  • Silicone implants: Silicone breast implants have silicone gel material within them. This feels like natural breast tissue, which is why our surgeons prefer silicone gel implants.
  • Round breast implants: A round breast implant refers to the shape of the implant itself. The round shape contributes to a fuller look. These have a higher profile option if you want your breasts to project more. These implants are less likely to rotate out of place than others.

You will also work with your breast augmentation surgeon to select from a wide range of sizes to fit your body’s shape and frame.

Another factor in selecting implants is placement. The implant may sit behind the glandular tissue, a procedure called subglandular placement.  This is often a good option for those with larger natural breasts or chest muscles. Submuscular placement occurs under the muscle, behind the breast tissue and chest wall muscle. This creates a more natural appearance.

Choosing the Right Implant Size

At ICLS, we believe choosing the correct implants takes time, research and lots of “trial and error.” We believe implant sizing should align with the natural proportions of your body and your specific enhancement goals. We focus less on implant size and more on the unique anatomy of the breasts, as well as the right technique to achieve the desired result. To simplify this approach, we have developed a well-honed five-step process for helping patients choose an implant size:

  1. VECTRA® 3D imaging. During your first visit, our nursing team will use the advanced VECTRA® 3D imaging system to obtain scans of your breasts. This step is useful for determining implant size but also for Dr. Khanna to familiarise herself with your anatomy and breast shape.
  2. Measurements. During this step, Dr. Khanna will collect measurements and consider the breasts’ size proportionately to the rest of your body. She will also note your posture, the positioning of your breasts on the chest wall, and other specifics necessary to produce natural-looking results.
  3. Homework. Before you return for your next visit, we will ask you to collect photos to help us plan the procedure. These photos can include celebrities, models, surgical before-and-afters or any display that resembles your ideal bustline. (You are also encouraged to show us photos of breasts you dislike to give us a sense of results you want to avoid!)
  4. Make a homemade implant. Once you have gathered some reference pictures, we ask that you construct a makeshift sizer at home. This is achieved by using the toe end of your pantyhose, filled with dried rice and tied with a loose knot, creating an “implant” you can fit in your sports bra. You can then add or take away rice to the hose until you like the volume you see in the bra. Please measure this amount and bring the amount to your appointment, which will be noted in your chart. This may help you visualize your potential size.
  5. Pre-operative appointment. This meeting will involve an in-depth review of the work and research we (and you!) have completed so far. We will take stock of your data and look at your measurements. Afterward, you will be given sizers to try on before we narrow down a choice for your implant size and projection. We offer the latest cohesive silicone gel implant options for a natural look and feel.

Your initial consultation at ICLS is a pivotal step in your journey, offering a chance for a meaningful connection between you and Dr. Khanna. During this session, Dr. Khanna will not only take precise measurements and perform detailed VECTRA® 3D scans but also engage personally with you to understand your medical history and discuss your specific aspirations for the procedure.

This one-on-one discussion ensures that every aspect of your planned augmentation aligns perfectly with your expectations and health requirements. Emphasising a personalised approach, the consultation is important to establish a strong rapport and trust, which are foundational for a successful surgical outcome.

Dr. Khanna’s commitment to providing dedicated care is a core part of the ICLS Advantage. We encourage an open dialogue throughout your experience with us, ensuring you feel supported and confident to voice any questions or concerns you might have.

What Happens During Breast Augmentation Procedure?

Breast augmentation surgery is typically completed under general anesthesia. Depending on the techniques used and whether or not additional procedures (e.g. breast lift or fat transfer) are being incorporated, the surgery can last from one to several hours.

Incision options allow your surgeon to create the least visible scar while ensuring proper placement. The incision for each implant is made as carefully as possible at one of two typical sites.

  • Inframammary crease: This is the area under the breastfold.
  • Periareolar incision: Made around the nipple

The breast implant is then placed either under the pectoralis major muscle (submuscular) or on top of the muscle and under the breast tissue (subglandular).

Breast implant placement makes a difference in the final outcome. Under the breast tissue creates a more projected breast, while under the muscle, it has a more natural look.

Dr. Khanna and her team expertly conduct the surgery leveraging unique equipment and state-of-the-art technology. Dr. Khanna’s extensive experience allows for meticulous execution, affirming her professionalism and dedication to excellence in patient care.

How Long Does it Take to Perform Breast Augmentation Surgery?

While Dr. Khanna has said, she is not ‘fast’ at this surgery but efficient, don’t think it will take hours to complete. She can finish a breast augmentation surgery in under half an hour.

Breast Augmentation Recovery

Immediate Post-Surgery (Day of Surgery to 1 Week):

  • Patients return home with surgical tape on the incision sites.
  • Initial discomfort is typically minimal and can be managed with oral medication. It’s common to feel some discomfort and swelling in this first few days.
  • Patients can generally resume normal daily activities five to seven days following the surgery.

1 Week Post-Surgery:

  • Surgical tape is removed 7-10 days after surgery.
  • Sutures used are dissolvable; however, they may be trimmed if necessary 7-10 days after surgery.

2 Weeks Post-Surgery:

  • For the first two weeks, a light bra or bralette is worn to support healing.

2 to 8 Weeks Post-Surgery:

  • After two weeks, patients transition to wearing an underwire bra, which should be continued for four to six weeks to support the breasts and implants as they heal.

4 to 6 Weeks Post-Surgery:

  • Exercise, heavy lifting, and strenuous activities can typically be resumed, but timing should be personalized based on the patient’s unique recovery process. Dr. Khanna and her team will provide guidance on when it is safe to resume these activities.

Follow-Up Care:

Dr. Khanna will schedule follow-up appointments as necessary to monitor healing and ensure optimal results tailored to each patient’s needs. This consistent monitoring is crucial for achieving the best outcomes and addressing any concerns promptly.

How Long Do Breast Implants Last?

Though breast implants are not lifelong devices, there is no defined time limit for breast implants. That said, implants can age or experience complications, which usually require attention. With that in mind, please note that capsular contracture rates at ICLS are extremely low as a result of our exceptional surgical techniques, which often lead to a rapid recovery for breast surgery patients.

Generally, as our bodies naturally age, our lifestyles and personal choices may evolve too. Some women may seek more balance, symmetry and/or more or less volume in their breasts within 10 – 15 years of first receiving implants. These women may be candidates for breast revision surgery. With routine monitoring, your breast augmentation surgeon will be able to ensure your implants maintain your desired look and recommend revisions if necessary.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What are the Risks of Breast Augmentation?

Breast augmentation is considered a safe procedure for those who are health. Any type of surgical procedure will create risks of bleeding and infection. Additionally, capsular contracture, or the formation of scar tissue around the implant that causes pain is another risk. Implants may rupture, and nerve damage is possible.

  • How Do I Choose Between Saline and Silicone Implants?

Both saline and silicone breast implants have an outer silicone shell. The difference is in the way they feel. Saline is softer, and there’s less risk of complications if rupture happens. Silicone feels and looks like natural breast tissue.

  • What are the Most Common Incision Types?

Inframammary incisions, those located under the fold of the skin, are the most common. Periareola incisions, around the areola are also commonly used.

Can breast augmentation be combined with other procedures?

In addition to mastopexy, which is commonly combined with breast augmentation, Dr. Khanna is frequently able to complement this surgery with additional cosmetic surgery procedures. Depending on your unique aesthetic goals, your personalized experience at ICLS can include body contouring surgeries (e.g. liposuction or tummy tuck) or facial enhancement procedures (such as facelift or eyelid surgery).

Please also note that we offer a wide variety of non-surgical options and skincare products that can be added to your treatment. If any solution piques your interest, we encourage you to bring it up at your initial consultation.

  • How Do I Ensure Natural-Looking Results?

By working with our team for your breast augmentation surgery in Toronto, we ensure natural looking breast implants by providing you with exceptional attention to your needs. We use advanced technology and resources to help create more authentic and desired outcomes for each patient.

  • How Long Is The Recovery For Breast Augmentation?

Approximately one week before many normal daily routines can be resumed.

  • What Kind of Incisions Should I Expect With Breast Augmentation?

The incision for each implant is made as inconspicuously as possible at one of two typical sites. These sites include in the inframammary crease (under the breast fold) most commonly or periareolar (around the nipple). The breast implant is then placed either under the pectoralis major muscle (submuscular) or on top of the muscle and under the breast tissue (subglandular).

  • When Will My Breast Augmentation Results Appear?

Breast augmentation is an outpatient procedure, so you’ll be able to go home on the very same day as your surgery. However, your implants will need some time to “settle” into the breast. You will also experience some swelling after your surgery. These side effects will take around 6 months to dissipate, with your true, final result being one year after surgery.

  • What Are My Implant Options For Breast Augmentation?

Implants vary in size, shape, texture, and filling — saline or silicone. While saline implants are versatile and widely known, cohesive silicone gel implants, often called “gummy bear” implants, are more often used. They offer a more natural look and feel. The size, diameter, and projection of the implants are critical details to discuss with your surgeon to ensure the results align with your expectations.

  • Is Breast Augmentation Suitable For Older Women?

As we age, our bodies naturally change, with gravity and time often leading to sagging breast tissue. Many older women choose breast augmentation not only to enhance volume but also to reclaim a youthful contour. To effectively address these changes, combining breast augmentation with a breast lift is a popular option.

Unlike augmentation alone, which increases breast size, a breast lift removes excess skin and reshapes the tissue into a tighter, more lifted position. This combination can significantly rejuvenate the breast’s appearance, providing a more youthful and refreshed look.
