Puffy-looking and droopy eyes and eyelids can often make a person look older than they really are. Our eyes are such an important facial feature, and they impart so much character to the way we look. To improve their appearance, many people choose to get an eyelid lift. Also known as Blepharoplasty, the eyelid lift is the surgical removal of fat and usually excess skin and muscle from the upper and/or lower eyelids. A blepharoplasty is perfect for fixing droopy upper lids that can not only make you appear older, but can also actually impair your vision.
Blepharoplasty is also used to improve puffy lower lids, which can give you a perpetually tired appearance. Patients are normally thrilled with their blepharoplasty results because not only do they look younger, but they look rested and refreshed with their firmer-looking eyelids. Sometimes a procedure called a canthopexy is also done to lift the outer corners of the eyes if they happen to be droopy. A common misconception about a blepharoplasty is that it can remove dark circles under the eyes. Unfortunately, dark circles are vascular in nature and are also due to thin skin under the eyes, so they cannot be corrected by surgery.
Although eyelid lift surgery is performed in our fully accredited clinic under a local anesthetic, it may also be performed under general anaesthetic if there is more than one procedure being done. Dr. Khanna may also recommend that you combine your eyelid lift with other procedures such as a brow lift to correct a drooping brow. The eyelid lift is adaptable enough to be done in conjunction with other procedures for a comprehensive facial rejuvenation treatment.
The procedure for the blepharoplasty is quite simple. Small incisions are made in the creases of the upper lids to keep any scarring as minimal as possible and hidden by the natural fold of the eye. The incisions for the lower lid portion of the procedure are also made as inconspicuously as possible by placing them along the lower lash line and in the smile creases by eyes. The blepharoplasty procedure takes approximately 1–2 hours.
