Double chins can be an unflattering sign of aging and weight gain. In Toronto, the experts at ICLS offer under chin, or submental liposuction to help restore definition to an individual’s appearance. To learn more about this procedure, call and schedule your consultation with our experts!
What Causes Double Chins?
Aging affects the face in different ways. While wrinkles may impact the forehead and skin near the eyes and mouth, skin laxity can lead to the development of sagging skin throughout the face. Most noticeably, skin near and below the chin loses its elasticity as we age, causing the skin here to begin sagging. If that weren’t enough, changing metabolic rates can cause fat to accumulate in new areas throughout the body – including below the chin. This results in the development of a double-chin and jowls as we get older.
Double chins are unique in that they do not occur just in older patients. Fat deposits can also develop in the area below the chin in younger patients who are genetically inclined to carry weight in this part of their body. For these individuals, the aging process may in fact worsen their condition and further undermine their self-confidence. Finding an appropriate and effective treatment for a double chin early on can be a valuable long-term solution.
Under Chin (Submental) Liposuction
Most patients are familiar with liposuction as an effective surgical procedure used to give individuals a better body contour in areas that are difficult to eliminate with diet and exercise. However, few patients are aware that liposuction can also be used to dramatically change the facial shape, by recontouring the neck and jawline. Patients who are concerned that their neck and jawline lack definition can strongly benefit from this small and very simple procedure known as under-chin liposuction or “submental liposuction”.
Submental liposuction works by removing collections of fatty tissue under the chin. By using ultra small incisions and a very thin cannula, this area can be effectively targeted and unwanted fat tissue easily removed. The result is added definition to the lower face, improved facial appearance and increased self-confidence.
There are several benefits to choosing this form of facial liposuction. To begin, the procedure is minimally invasive – meaning minimal recovery time compared to other forms of plastic surgery and opening the possibility of treatment for patients who would be inclined to avoid traditional, incision heavy treatment. Permanent fat tissue removal also means that patients are able to maintain and enjoy the results of their liposuction treatment for the long-term. While there are new, non-surgical alternatives, many cosmetic surgeons continue to recommend liposuction for treating double chins because of its reliable longevity. Likewise, double chin liposuction is a one and done procedure – unless an individual gains extreme weight and fat cells develop again in the treated area, most patients can trust that their lipo will last.
Who is A Candidate for Submental Liposuction?
Compared to other forms of plastic surgery, under chin liposuction is considerably less invasive. Patients are not required to go under sedation and most return to work within a week of their plastic surgery. With that said, there are certain patient conditions that are better suited for under chin lipo. Patients that benefit the most from this procedure are individuals who meet the following conditions:
- Persons with excess fat below the chin, known as a double chin
- Individuals with the appearance or a heavy, square-shaped or bottom-heavy face
- Individuals with sufficient skin elasticity
While submental liposuction is highly effective in removing unwanted fat cells, it’s important to remember that the procedure cannot tighten extremely stretched or thin skin. For these individuals as well as those with platysmal banding or extreme sagging skin below the chin and around the neck, our Toronto surgeon can work with you to identify an effective alternative treatment.
In some instances, this procedure may be combined with other facial plastic surgeries to maximize final aesthetics. At ICLS, many of our patients choose to combine double chin lipo with contouring procedures such as a lower face or neck lift. This multi-point treatment strategy is an excellent method for adding permanent definition to the lower face, rather than settling for simply sagging skin or life with a double chin.
What to Expect During Surgery
At ICLS, submental liposuction is performed in our fully accredited Oakville clinic under local anaesthesia. The most common method of performing liposuction is the tumescent technique. With this approach, an anaesthetic solution is injected into the area to be treated. The liquid causes the compartments of fat to become firm or tense, allowing the small liposuction cannula to move smoothly beneath the skin as the fat is removed. Patients are left with a very small incision area which looks as though a small mole has been removed and since it is hidden behind the chin is almost invisible. These will also fade significantly over time.
Recovering from Liposuction
While liposuction is much less invasive than other plastic surgeries, patients should still prepare to avoid strenuous activity for at least two or more weeks. Immediately after submental surgery, most patients will experience some swelling, bruising and tenderness throughout the recovery period. We typically recommend patients take it easy for the first few days following their surgery and keep their heads upright to help alleviate uncomfortable swelling. If any non-dissolvable sutures were placed, you’ll return to our clinic for suture removal and post-surgery check up about a week after your procedure.
While everyone heals differently, submental liposuction recovery tends to be shorter than traditional lipo or plastic surgery. Most patients are able to return to work or school about a week after their procedure.
