There are two types of abnormal veins that affect the appearance and function of millions of people, spider veins and varicose veins. Spider veins are red or purple veins caused by dilation of small blood vessels in the skin, they do not pose any health threats to anyone, but some may choose to get rid of them for cosmetic reasons. Varicose veins, are large blue veins that can cause ankle swelling and pain if left untreated, and may pose a health risk. Left untreated these veins can cause blood clots, inflammation and spontaneous bleeding. If it is determined that you have varicose veins, and you wish for them to be treated, we will refer you to someone who specializes in this area.
Spider veins mainly affect appearance and serve no function for the body. Treatment for this involves a series of simple injections by a nurse to reduce and eliminate the veins. If you do decide to proceed with sclerotherapy, it is important that a properly trained nurse or board certified physician performs the procedure.
