Profractional Laser Therapy

Profractional is a gradual procedure that stimulates the replacement of aged and photo–damaged skin. It is used for fine lines, scars, rough skin texture and hyperpigmentation. Profractional laser is based on the principle of microthermal treatment zones, while leaving the surrounding tissue intact. The laser pulse creates tiny ablative zones, triggering the body’s natural healing process, therefore stimulating the growth of new, healthy skin tissue. Studies show that the new skin (epithelium) will start to form within 24 hours, but it will remain covered by the old stratum corneum for 4-14 days. During this period, accelerated natural exfoliation will reveal the repaired epidermal tissue and new stratum corneum. You should avoid injury to your skin and sun exposure during this time. You should use a dual UVA/UVB product of SPF 60 (La Roche Posay Antherpos 60SPF) for at least the next six months. Most importantly, while you are having ongoing Profractional treatments, you should avoid prolonged sun exposure and wear sun protective clothing such as a hat.

Pre–Treatment

Patients cannot be tanned during the course of this treatment, as it increases the risk of pigmentation problems. A sunscreen should be used daily.

Details of Procedure

Patients should expect to be in the clinic for approximately 1 hour for their treatment. The treatment itself is extremely well tolerated. If required, patients may be use a topical numbing cream 1 hour prior to treatment. A series of 4 treatments is normally recommended, and these appointments are scheduled 4–6 weeks apart.

Itchiness and dryness of the skin are extremely common post-procedure. This flaking and dry crusting will gradually clear as the skin heals. Do not pick or scrape at these areas. Also, avoid the use of any abrasive cleansers, exfoliants or brushes during the healing process. The use of gentle moisturizers such as Toleriane Spa, Cicaplast and La Roche Posay 60 SPF can protect and reduce any discomfort. Also, the skin may appear “sunburned” for 2–3 days; however this associated redness will fade as the skin heals. Minimal swelling may appear anywhere from 1–3 days post–treatment. Lastly, a minimal “Profractional grid pattern” can often be seen on the skin for approximately 2–5 days after. Use of an antibacterial, anti–inflammatory mineral makeup (ICLS uses GloMineral makeup) can be used to cover and reduce the associated redness.

Post Treatment

If you have been instructed to use AHA’s, Hydroquinone, Glycolic acid or Retinol during the course of your treatments if would be advisable to discontinue use 3–7 days before and 3–7 days after your treatment.
