Metvix Topical Therapy Cream

Metvix is a prescription cream that is used in conjunction with red light therapy for the treatment of skin cancer. Metvix is used extensively for the treatment of a variety of different skin conditions including Actinic Keratosis (pre–cancerous lesions on the face and scalp) as well as Primary Superficial Basal Cell Carcinoma (sBCC type of skin cancer). The main advantage of Metvix therapy is that it offers excellent cosmetic results without the associated scar that can be caused by surgical intervention.

To prepare the area, lesions will be roughed up using a curettage instrument. Metvix medication will then be applied to the skin and covered with a special bandage. During this time you may leave the office or clinic but avoid exposing the area to natural or artificial light sources and protect it from cold temperatures. After 3 hours from the initial application and removal of the cream, exposure to the red light therapy will begin. Patients should expect to be under the light for approximately 8 minutes. Once the procedure is over, anti–biotic ointment and a band-aid will be applied. The skin is extremely sensitive to sunlight for 48 hours after treatment. For the first 48 hours patients must keep the treatment area completely covered if outdoors.
