IPL – BBL

Patients who are looking to achieve obvious improvement in their skin tone, without significant downtime, will often benefit from IPL – BBL treatment also known as “Fotofacials/Photofacials”. IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) is an extremely effective treatment option for patients with sun damage, fine facial wrinkles, brown pigmentation (age spots) and/or scattered blood vessels. Some collagen tightening and remodelling is expected with repeat treatments of the IPL – BBL.

It is important to understand that not all IPL treatments are created equal. Both “spa grade” as well as “medical grade” IPL’s exist, and it is important to understand which laser is being used. At the Institute of Cosmetic and Laser Surgery we only operate a “medical grade” IPL – BBL laser, which is performed by an extensively trained nurse under the direct supervision and direction of Dr. Sheetal Sapra. IPL can also be performed in conjunction with Pixel, which allows us to also focus on more textural concerns including wrinkles and unevenness. Patients with lighter skin tones are often the best candidates for this treatment. There are however, many other treatments including Yag, Dermamelan or Profractional that would be suitable if you have the above concerns, but have a darker skin tone.

For many patients, we will often recommend starting on the SkinTx skin care program to begin to loosen both the deep and superficial pigmentation (brown). Although not necessary, this will aid in achieving the greatest and most visible results.

A layer of gel is applied to the skin, before a light is emitted from the handpiece. Most patients tolerate IPL very well, however, we do send patients home with ice packs to help soothe the skin. Patients can expect to experience the look and feel of a mild sunburn for approximately 1–2 days after the treatment. This procedure can also be performed during the summer months as long as a high SPF such as Dermaglow 85SPF is worn to protect the skin and no tanning is incurred. Patients will normally require between 3–5 treatments to achieve the greatest overall results which are scheduled approximately 4 weeks apart. IPL – BBL can be performed on a number of areas including the face, chest, neck, hands and arms.
