Acne Scarring

Severe acne can have a devastating affect on the skin resulting in pigmentation changes and three main types of scars, erythematous scars, ice pick scars and hill and valley scarring.

Pigmentation Changes

These can easily be treated in the office with the use of chemical peels such as Jessner's peels and Microdermabrasion. These treatments are carried by medically trained nurses at The Skin Spa.

Erythematous Scars

These are "red" scars that occur after severe acne. They may take many years to fade. This kind of scarring can be treated gently and effectively with the pulsed dye laser. Immediately after the laser treatment, there will be some bruising that will resolve within 10 days. At that time, there will be some brownish discoloration which will resolve within two months resulting in smooth, evenly coloured skin.

Ice Pick Scars

Ice pick scars are assessed by the plastic surgeon in the office. They usually are surgically removed. There will be stitches at the surgery site for five days. Subsequently the itch mark will be lasered within six months resulting in smother appearing skin.

Hill And Valley Scarring

Hill and valley scarring is a form of acne scarring seeing large depressions in the skin. This is most effectively treated with the following treatments:

Artecoll - this is a filler substance that can fill the skin resulting in smoother appearing skin.

CO2 laser - the laser gently evaporates the top layers of the skin. Healing time is approximately 10 days followed by redness for at least two months. This usually results in a 50-90% smoothing of the skin.
