Patients, who have a desire and need for more prominent cheek contour, may benefit from either a permanent facial cheek implant or from temporary cheek augmentation. Both can be very effective options depending on a patients individual needs. These options can also help patients who have significantly reduced cheek tissue, fat pads or a lack of cheekbone contour as an inherited characteristic. The intended result is to give a more enhanced look to the patient’s cheek contour, and correct any possible asymmetry.
The cheek implant procedure is performed as a day surgery, under local or general anaesthetic in our fully accredited Oakville clinic. A small incision is made under the upper lip, in the lower eyelid, or in the hairline, which means that any scar would be undetectable. During your initial appointments, Dr. Julie Khanna will choose a particular implant that would be suitable for the level of correction required, as well as to maintain consistency with your facial shape and size. The implant is then inserted and anchored into place along the natural cheek contour. The implant is made of a synthetic material that feels much like the natural tissue found in the cheek.
Alternatively, patients who are looking for a more temporary option may benefit from facial volume or cheek augmentation using a hylauronic acid filler. Hyaluronic acid a substance naturally found in the body’s cells. It allows the cells to bind or hold water, and is responsible for maintaining tissue hydration. Over time the hyaluronic acid will slowly become absorbed, and will disappear gradually. Because this substance is found within the body, and is non–animal in origin, there is no need for preliminary allergy testing and is extremely natural in appearance. Augmentation of the cheek can last for approximately 1 year. Contouring the cheek area using temporary fillers is a very simple procedure and patients can often return to their regular activities the next day.
