Arm Lift (Brachioplasty)
Brachioplasty, also known as an arm lift, is a surgical procedure to remove excess skin and fatty deposits from the upper arm. After dramatic weight loss and as skin ages it tends to loose elasticity and becomes lax. Diet and exercise typically have little effect on diminishing the appearance of this excess skin. Surgical excision is often the most effective way of removing this excess skin. Scars are the biggest drawback of this operation. The scars will extend from the armpit, along the inside of the arm to the elbow. This operation exchanges one cosmetic problem, excess skin, for another, scarring. Patients with very lax skin are likely to find this exchange worthwhile.
Details of Procedure
The operation is done on an outpatient basis under local anesthesia with sedation, or under general anesthesia, and takes approximately two to three hours to perform. Dr. Khanna makes an incision from the armpit down to the elbow along the inside of the arm to eliminate loose skin and to tighten the remaining tissue. Brachioplasty usually takes 2-3 hours to perform and leaves the upper arms in a more firm and youthful appearance.
Post Treatment Care
The patient goes home with upper arms in a compression garment which must be worn for 6 weeks after surgery. Initial discomfort is easily controlled with oral medication. The sutures used are dissolvable and therefore do not have to be removed, though they may be trimmed 7 days after surgery if necessary. Bruising and swelling decrease with in 10-20 days. The final result is evident in 4-6 weeks or sooner with continued improvement for several months.
Possible risks
The specific risks and the suitability of this procedure for a given individual can be determined only at the time of consultation. All surgical procedures have some degree of risk. Minor complications that do not affect the outcome occur occasionally. Major complications are unusual.
