Arm Lift (Brachioplasty)

Brachioplasty, also known as an arm lift, is a surgical procedure to remove excess skin and fatty deposits from the upper arm. After dramatic weight loss and as skin ages it tends to loose elasticity and becomes lax. Diet and exercise typically have little effect on diminishing the appearance of this excess skin. Surgical excision is often the most effective way of removing this excess skin. Scars are the biggest drawback of this operation. The scars will extend from the armpit, along the inside of the arm to the elbow. This operation exchanges one cosmetic problem, excess skin, for another, scarring. Patients with very lax skin are likely to find this exchange worthwhile.

Details of Procedure

The operation is done on an outpatient basis under local anesthesia with sedation, or under general anesthesia, and takes approximately two to three hours to perform. Dr. Khanna makes an incision from the armpit down to the elbow along the inside of the arm to eliminate loose skin and to tighten the remaining tissue. Brachioplasty usually takes 2-3 hours to perform and leaves the upper arms in a more firm and youthful appearance.

Post Treatment Care

The patient goes home with upper arms in a compression garment which must be worn for 6 weeks after surgery. Initial discomfort is easily controlled with oral medication. The sutures used are dissolvable and therefore do not have to be removed, though they may be trimmed 7 days after surgery if necessary. Bruising and swelling decrease with in 10-20 days. The final result is evident in 4-6 weeks or sooner with continued improvement for several months.

Possible risks

The specific risks and the suitability of this procedure for a given individual can be determined only at the time of consultation. All surgical procedures have some degree of risk. Minor complications that do not affect the outcome occur occasionally. Major complications are unusual.

To find out if you qualify for brachioplasty, schedule a consultation with Dr. Julie Khanna at our Oakville office, between Toronto and Hamilton in Ontario. She will discuss the risks and benefits of plastic surgery with you to help you make an informed decision.

Liposuction: Lipoplasty in Ontario

Liposuction is offered by the surgeons at our state-of-the-art facility in Oakville, between Hamilton and Toronto in Ontario. Liposuction is a simple surgical procedure, which re-sculpts the body, removing collections of fatty tissue and smoothing out lumpy pockets of fat to improve your body contours. For best results, you should be of relatively normal weight with extra fat localized in specific areas such as the hips, buttocks, and abdomen. Liposuction is also effective in removing fat deposits from the back, legs, arms, face, and neck.

Liposuction is considered a cosmetic procedure and is neither a substitute for proper diet and exercise, nor a method for overall weight loss. It cannot eliminate cellulite or correct loose, hanging skin. In fact, liposuction works best when you have healthy, elastic skin with the capacity to shrink evenly after surgery. If your skin has lost much of its elasticity, you may need a skin tightening procedure such as a tummy tuck, thigh lift, buttock lift, or arm lift. Before performing liposuction, one of our surgeons will evaluate your skin and let you know if you will require any of these additional procedures. Also available to our liposuction patients in Hamilton, Toronto, and surrounding areas, from our Oakville, Ontario office are post-operative Endermologie® treatments, used to optimize the results of your liposuction by reducing the visibility of cellulite.

Liposuction is a procedure offered by surgeons all over the world, so how do you know where to go to find superior care? At our Ontario practice, the Institute of Cosmetic & Laser Surgery, Dr. Khanna is concerned with your overall health and peace of mind, and provides liposuction suited to your individual needs. Patients from Hamilton, Toronto, and surrounding areas of Ontario have received optimal care and exceptional results from Dr. Khanna and are now enjoying a dramatic change in the shape of their bodies and are satisfied with their newly defined figures. Schedule a consultation with Dr. Khanna today at her Ontario office to determine if liposuction is right for your body.

Post Dramatic Weight Loss/Body Lift Procedures

Whether weight loss is achieved through diet and exercise or through bariatric surgery such as gastric by-pass, excess skin is often a result from dramatic weight loss. When achieving dramatic weight loss in a short time, skin often does not shrink back to its original form. Plastic surgery can help eliminate excess skin and give patients the confidence and body contour they desire.

Body contouring after major weight loss reduces the excess skin that is left behind after the expansion of the skin, loss of fat and lack of tissue elasticity associated with the weight loss. It is not uncommon to have this reconstructive surgery performed in stages. Common surgical procedures following a major weight loss include; Arm Lift (Brachioplasty), Breast Lift (Mastopexy), Thigh Lift, Tummy Tuck (Abdominoplasty).

To find out if you qualify for any body contouring procedures, schedule a consultation with Dr. Julie Khanna at our Oakville office, between Toronto and Hamilton in Ontario. Dr. Julie Khanna will discuss the risks and benefits of plastic surgery with you to help you make an informed decision.

Thigh Lift

Thigh lift surgery is performed when a patient has excess skin or loose skin in the thighs. Patients who have had a dramatic weight loss or patients with pronounced wrinkling of the skin can benefit from a thigh lift.

Details of Procedure

The operation is done on an outpatient basis under general anesthesia. The incisions for a full thigh or medial thigh lift are made as high as possible around the upper thigh. The excess skin is removed and the remaining skin is draped into a tighter more youthful contour.

Post Treatment Care

The patient goes home with dressings on the incision sites, which are usually removed within 7 days. A compression garment is worn for 4-6 weeks after surgery. Initial discomfort is usually well controlled with oral medication. Sutures are dissolvable and are trimmed within 7-10 days. You should be able to sit comfortably one week after thigh and buttock lift surgery. Normal activities may be resumed during the second week and many people return to work the third or fourth week after surgery. Exercise and any strenuous activity can be resumed 6 weeks after surgery. It can take 6-12 months to see the final result of body lifting surgery.

Possible Risks

The specific risks and the suitability of this procedure for a given individual can be determined only at the time of consultation. All surgical procedures have some degree of risk. Minor complications that do not affect the outcome occur occasionally. Major complications are unusual.

Tummy Tuck (Abdominoplasty in the Toronto Area)

Abdominoplasty, also known as a tummy tuck, is a plastic surgery procedure performed at the Institute of Cosmetic & Laser Surgery near Toronto that involves removing excess skin and fat from the middle and/or lower abdomen. This plastic surgery procedure is done to decrease the size and flatten the appearance of the abdomen, as well as repair and renew the abdominal muscle wall. Reasons for needing a tummy tuck include multiple pregnancies in women, excess weight loss, multiple past abdominal surgeries that have left the abdomen weakened, and fat deposits or loose abdominal skin that will not respond to regular diet and exercise.

During your consultation with Dr. Khanna at our Oakville office near Toronto, Ontario, she will discuss with you the goals and limitations of the plastic surgery, as well as the risks associated with it. Although abdominoplasty can enhance your appearance and increase your confidence and self-esteem, it is important to be realistic about the outcome of your surgery as it relates to your specific needs and body type.

There are two types of tummy tuck procedures offered at our Oakville office, near Toronto. The first is a full or complete abdominoplasty, which addresses problems regarding the whole of the abdominal area. This plastic surgery procedure ranges in length from two to five hours depending on the extent of the repair. The second procedure is a partial abdominoplasty or mini-tummy tuck, which deals primarily with fat deposits and skin that are limited to the area below the navel. This procedure can take one to two hours, again depending on the extent of the repair. In both cases liposuction may be performed in conjunction with the abdominoplasty to achieve an optimum body-contouring outcome.

Whether it is a full or partial abdominoplasty, the surgery involves an incision than can extend from hip to hip and is located as low as possible but above suprapubic or pubic hairline. A second incision is made around the navel (belly button) and the skin is then loosened and freed from the abdominal wall. The abdominal muscles are pulled together and stitched into the new position to provide a firmer abdominal wall, which in turn flattens the appearance of the abdomen and makes the waistline narrower. The skin is then pulled down and the excess is removed. A new hole is cut for the navel and stitched into place. The remaining skin is then stitched back together.

When the surgery is complete, one or two drains may be stitched into position along the main incision. This allows for drainage of excess fluid from the surgical site and will help with healing. Generally, the drains are removed two to three days post surgery. A special tight-fitting garment is worn for the first six weeks after surgery. It gives compression and support to the healing abdominal area and should be worn 24 hours per day, except during showering which is allowed after the drains are removed. Wound dressing will be provided to you following surgery along with care instructions that you need to abide by. Dr. Khanna will also recommend that someone stay with you for the first two to three days to aid in self-care and daily activities.

For the first few days following a tummy tuck at our practice near Toronto, Dr. Khanna may prescribe medication to help you control the swelling and pain, which is normal after surgery. Average healing time is four to six weeks, however, some people heal faster or slower than others. Previous exercise regimens may be resumed slowly after approximately four to six weeks; however, abdominal exercises should be avoided for up to three months. It may be quite some time before you feel back to your old self. It is important that you walk around as soon as possible after your surgery to encourage circulation and prevent post surgical complications such as blood clots or pneumonia. These are risks associated with any surgery; however, following your post operative instructions carefully will help aid in your healing process going smoothly.
