You may remember our post on Electronic Medical Records (EMR) from back in the day. It’s so hard to believe that we were talking about going EMR almost five years ago. So while we hummed and hawed about how we were actually going to make this a reality, we finally did what anyone at ICLS would do…WE MADE A GOAL! We vowed that by the end of 2013 we would be fully integrated into the wild, wonderful world of paperless.
And now here we are with 9 whole months to spare. What shall we do with all this time we have? Knowing us we’ll probably set another goal. So without further ado, we would like to officially announce that ICLS has moved into the future with full EMR or paperless status. And we couldn’t be happier about it.
Now let’s be serious, there were a lot of reservations about going paperless. We needed to figure out how to maintain our highest level of customer service whilst going paperless. So we created our EMR Army, which included Rachel, Stephanie, Kelli, Katie and Roxanne. Our job was to actually make EMR a reality while not only maintaining, but actually improving patient care. In order to do this:
Dr. Julie Khanna took one for the team and went first on January 28th! Dr. Khanna was our biggest ambassador and cheerleader for going EMR, as she knew what the benefits would be for our patients as well as ICLS as a whole. After countless training sessions, meetings and many tweaks- the plastics team: Dr. Khanna, Laura, Roxanne, Brenda, Beth, Karen B. and the rest of the O.R. and Recovery team are fully functional using the EMR system. Her team was extremely successful in their launch, and our Derm, Skin Spa and Clinical Trials just joined the ranks as of this Monday March 18th.
As a quick refresher, Electronic Medical Records is essentially the transference of patient records from paper charts to a computerized medical record. Thereby enabling information from a patient’s chart to be available; as Dr. Khanna famously refers to as “at the press of a button.” Not only has this helped with lessening ICLS’ impact on the environment by substantially reducing the amount of paper we use but it has also facilitated an improvement in communication, consistency and customer service by leaps and bounds.
If you’ve been into our office this week the most obvious visible changes is seeing our staff shuffle around with Ipads in hand, and new patients must register prior to their appointment using our online portal. Other benefits we’ve already noticed are having the medical record available to all staff members means we can access a patient’s record simultaneously and there is no more searching for charts! Talk about being on the same page (pun intended!)
Every day we find new ways to be faster and more efficient on the IPads. (For example, did you know you can split the keyboard in half so you can use it like an iPhone!? Just start calling us Mac Genius’) Although it’s definitely been a learning curve, it’s amazing that even with such a dramatic change, staff at ICLS are “loving their lives” at only 5 days in!
We would also like to give a massive thank you to our patients at this point! You have all been incredibly willing to adapt to our evolving process and have embraced the changes with open arms. And even though this is beginning to sound like a blubbering Oscar acceptance speech, we want to sincerely thank you for your support and encouragement because there is no way we could make these leaps without you. So thank you, thank you, thank you!!!
