November is a strange month. The weather rapidly disintegrates into a bone biting cold, and we don’t even have the beautiful fall foliage as consolation. But perhaps strangest of all is the dramatic increase in facial hair on the upper lips of the men we know and love.
This strange phenomenon can single handedly be attributed to Movember. Movember is an annual, month-long event where men grow moustaches during (you guessed it,) the month of November to raise awareness for prostate and other male cancers. The goal of Movember is to “change the face of men’s health.” Real clever fellas…
This is accomplished by encouraging men who we refer to as “Mo Bros” to get involved. Movember aims to aid in prevention, through early cancer detection, diagnosis and effective treatments. Besides getting an annual check-up, the Movember Foundation encourages men to be aware of any family history of cancer, and to adopt healthier lifestyles.
With a cause so near and dear to our hearts, ICLS couldn’t wait to participate. There was only one glaring problem; we only have one male in the entire ICLS staff. The one, the only, Dermatologist Dr. Sheetal Sapra (the crowd goes wild!!!) So with an ironic twist, we decided to collect funds from laser hair removal treatments being performed at ICLS. Every time a patient was treated for unwanted body or facial hair during the month of November, ICLS made a donation to the Movember foundation. So whether it was Lightsheer or the Coolglide laser hair removal systems, rest assure you were inadvertently supporting a great cause! Throughout the month of November *drum roll please* we collected a grand total of $750 dollars!!!
But our moustache related activities did not stop there. Karen our Clinic Director and Rachel, our Skin Spa Manager kindly agreed to judge a Movember moustache growing contest at CIC Canada. All these handsome men had to do to win was grow the meanest moustache, and they would be awarded with an amazing prize….respect and bragging rights. The second part of the awards ceremony was a draw for a Clarisonic cleansing brush, which was donated by ICLS. All of the fun was aimed to raise awareness and money for Movember. CIC even agreed to match the value raised by ICLS. We are very pleased to say that although Karen’s hubby is an employee of CIC, Rachel and Karen were still fair and impartial in their judging. We feel proud to have contributed to such an incredibly worthwhile cause. And here was the winner: in all his bushy glory!
Dr. Sapra and Dr. Khanna decided a long time ago that it is incredibly important to them to be actively involved in their local community and to give back in whatever way they can.
In fact, our Plastic Surgeon Dr. Julie Khanna has an ongoing program whereby she donates to the Canadian Breast Cancer Society and related charities whenever patients are referred to her. So we thank all of her patients for their kind words, and word-of-mouth references.
In addition, since yoga is so close to Dr. Sapra’s heart, he makes continual donations to the Africa Yoga Project. The Africa Yoga Project is an inspiring program that allows individuals to share their skills and strengths with those who will benefit from their teachings. Individuals are empowered, relationships are forged, communities are healed both emotionally and physically, and new possibilities are made into reality. So when Rachel suggested that they participate in Movember, Dr. Sapra and Dr. Khanna did not skip a beat. In their words: “giving back is the highest honour and the greatest privilege.”
