An abdominoplasty is a popular cosmetic surgery to improve body contour around the abdomen. Factors such as age, genetics, multiple pregnancies, and rapid weight loss can lead to the development of stretch marks, loose skin, and a collection of fat around the tummy. Diet and exercise can greatly reduce the amount of fat around the abdomen, but most will require surgery to obtain a more aesthetically pleasing body.
Depending on the severity of concern, a mini or full abdominoplasty can be performed. By removing excess fat and skin, and tightening the muscles in the abdominal wall, patients are able to achieve a flatter, more appealing abdominal contour.
As with all cosmetic surgical procedures involving fat removal; candidates should be of a healthy body weight. Surgery will involve an incision from one hip to the other, just above the pubic bone. Though this incision will leave a permanent scar, the incisions are placed where they will be hidden by undergarments and a bathing suit, and will greatly improve with time and the use of Dermatix, a topical silicone scar gel. Surgical time may take approximately 2-4 hours to complete, followed by an overnight stay in our ICLS recovery room. Two drainage tubes will be placed to prevent any fluid build-up and will remain in for 2-3 weeks; a specially fitted compression garment will also be required, and is to be worn for 24hours a day for approximately six months.
